The Americans with Disabilities Act is a law established in 1990 to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy the same rights and privileges in all areas of day-to-day living as the non-disabled population. The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities. Title I of the ADA pertains to protecting the rights of employees with disabilities. Title II impacts public services provided by local and state governments. Title III regulations apply specifically to services provided by businesses. According to the ADA Business Connection, all types of businesses are affected; including: restaurants, hotels, theaters, convention centers, doctors' offices, retail stores, museums, libraries, private schools, health spas, and day care centers. The Justice Department's website offers an abundance of information. For a quick overview on how the ADA might affect a particular business, read: Title III Highlights.
